— The United Nations Association of the United States of America has announced its 2020 award recipients: UNA Los Angeles Chapter President Jillian Boardman, Advocate of the Year; UNA Whittier Chapter President Bianca Salgado, Young Leader of the Year Award; UNA Connecticut Chapter President Joseph Baxer, Arnold Goodman Lifetime Achievement Award; UNA Broward County Chapter, Community Chapter of Excellence Award; UNA Arizona State University Chapter, Campus Chapter of Excellence Award.
— Amnesty International announced the release of the second edition of The State of African Regional Human Rights Bodies and Mechanisms 2019-2020, documenting “how African governments are grossly undermining regional human rights bodies by failing to comply with their decisions, ignoring their urgent appeals, neglecting to report to them on national human rights situations and starving them of resources they desperately need for operations. Governments also neglected the rights of people with disabilities and older persons by failing to ratify treaties relating to their protection.” The 54-page document is available online.
— In a survey commissioned by the European Parliament conducted this month, “nearly eight out of ten participants (77%) across the EU support the concept that the EU should only provide funds to Member States if the national government implements the rule of law and democratic principles. At least seven in ten participants agree with this statement in 26 EU Member States.”
— At UN Dispatch, Mark Leon Goldberg writes that awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to the United Nations World Food Programme “underscores growing concern about increasing global food insecurity and the clear connections between hunger and conflict.” Goldberg says the award “recognizes a key connection between hunger and global conflict. As the U.N. Security Council emphasized in a 2018 resolution, humankind can never eliminate hunger without first establishing peace.”
