— Thalif Deen of the UN Bureau at Inter Press Services writes, “There is widespread speculation” that when U.S. President Trump addresses the UN General Assembly on September 22, “he may either threaten to pull out of the UN (very unlikely), warn of possible cuts in financial contributions (likely), or downsize the US role in the world body (most likely).” Deen says “any proposed cuts — or attempts to ‘de-fund’ the UN — will also likely be a retaliation against the failed US resolution last month in the UN Security Council against the resumption of sanctions on Iran.”

— The World YWCA in partnership with the Office of the UN Youth Envoy will host the Young Women Transforming Systems for Gender Equality and Social Justice: World YWCA #YoungWomenLeaders Panel on September 23 at 4:00 p.m. Zurich time. The panel “will explore the impact of the pandemic of COVID-19 on vulnerable populations and movements around racism, gender based violence, and freedom from oppression, by engaging resilient young voices who are creatively finding solutions to end patriarchal and structural barriers for social and gender justice as a part of an effective response to sustainable development, even during the present complicated time in the world.”

— African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat has expressed “his full solidarity and extends his condolences to the governments and peoples of Member States affected by devastating flooding which have resulted in lives lost, massive displacement, diminished livelihoods and destruction of property. This humanitarian catastrophe has been pronounced in Sudan, Burkina Faso, Niger, Senegal, Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroun, Chad and Mauritania.”
